If you’re this far into Just Cause 4, you know by now you’ll need a way to get through the man-made lightning storm. Mira’s answer: snag the ion coils protecting the Meteolab and use the technology to build a lightning-proof boat dubbed the Thunderbarge. But getting the ion coil is no easy task. Just Cause 4 Thunderbarge: Obtaining the Ion Coil Walkthrough
The mission begins upon arriving at Mateolab. Mira explains in the cut scene that the facility uses ion coils to absorb lightning strikes. She needs those coils to devise a way around the man-made lightning storms ahead. The problem is to access the coils, you’ll need to deploy the three lightning rods protecting the base. Each lightning rod can be deployed by destroying its control panel. Follow your waypoints to each lighting rod.
Lightning Rod 1
Fly to the first lightning rod. It is completely undefended. Destroy the breaker near the lightning rod with your grappling hook to raise the rod.
Rod 2
Destroy the second rod. You’ll notice the lightning becoming more intense.
Rod 3
Destroy the third rod. Get ready to dodge lightning.
Return to the Console and Raise the Ion
Dodge the heavy lightning storm and return to the console. There are a few glitches that will require you to dodge lightning as Mira works them out, but eventually, you will be able to use the console to complete the mission and raise the ion.
Avoiding Lightning Strikes
Just because there are no hostiles in this mission doesn’t mean you aren’t in danger. In fact, it’s pretty easy to die on this if you’re not careful. Heed the in-game warning about lightning to stay alive:
Staying near deployed lightning rods is your safest bet, but naturally you’ll have to move out of protected range to reach the other objectives. While it’s hard to avoid lightning, it’s possible. Move as low and as quickly as possible if lighting is about to strike. You can tell you are about to be struck by lightning when bolts of electricity begin arching off of you. It looks like this:
