Award night 2019

The 2019 Award Night of the 2019 Deborah Cass Prize for Writing is a public event but please book via Eventbrite, using the password mentor.

WHEN: Wednesday 4 December, 6 to 7.30pm

WHERE: Abbotsford Convent, Industrial School Building, 1 St Heliers Street, Abbotsford.

This year we are honoured to have Maria Tumarkin as our guest speaker. Maria writes books, essays, reviews, and pieces for performance and radio. She also teaches creative writing at the University of Melbourne. Her most recent book, Axiomatic (Brow Books), won the 2018 Melbourne Prize for Literature’s Best Writing Award and was shortlisted for the Stella Prize. Maria is currently mentoring 2016 Prize winner Jean Bachoura through a Wheeler Centre program.
In 2019 the Prize drew 64 entries from around Australia. The winner and two runners-up have been chosen by our judges: writer, medical practitioner and Deborah Cass Prize alumna Melanie Cheng and writer and writing teacher Lee Kofman.

  1. Good luck, Anna. That’s marvellous news! There are many opportunities for emerging writers, and being shortlisted in a prestigious competition like this will give you access to them. I’ll keep fingers crossed for you on December 4.
