In Crusader Kings 3, your army size usually determines the outcome of a battle. However, the overall quality of your army is also a massive part of it. If you have half an army of experienced knights, and your enemy as a full army of only farmers, then the battle is heavily in your favor, even though you are outnumbered. This is because your army quality far outmatches your foe. Let’s learn more with our CK3 Army Quality Guide!

Army quality is determined by the soldiers within it. Having an army of farmers and peasants wielding pitchforks isn’t going to be raising your army quality anytime soon. But bring in knights and men-at-arms into the equation, then it most certainly does. Generally, this means a small army can hold off and win against a big army if your army quality is better than your enemies.

Before you begin to raise an army, always check the small indicator showing how many levies you can summon at the top right-hand side of your screen. It’s right next to your domain limit. The symbol next to the number of levies you have actually shows your army’s overall quality.

You can increase the number of outstanding units in your army, such as knights and men-at-arms regiments. However, Men-at-arms require gold or a prestige cost, depending on how much faith you have. Yes, they do seem costly, but having them, will significantly increase the overall quality, which means an advantage over enemy armies.

It’s best to have different men-at-arms ready, as these can give you the advantage you need to counter any enemy armies that try to attack you. It would be best if you always focused on quality rather than quantity. However, it differs depending on how far along you are in the game. At the start, battles will be farmers vs farmers until you play further into the game.
