All the new Magic Items in Strixhaven: Curriculum of Chaos Explained

Strixhaven magic items

The newest expansion for Dungeons & Dragons has arrived. Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos is a brand-new adventure set in a magical college. Strixhaven being a location that’s originally from Magic: The Gathering, this new adventure sees players experience the life of a student. You’ll be able to take tests, work on the campus and interact with other students residing at Strixhaven too. But there’ll also be new monsters to fight and more dungeons to explore as well.

While there’s a lot that this expansion adds to the base game of Dungeons & Dragons, today we’ll be focusing on the new magic items. Each magic item introduced in this expansion comes with a powerful ability that could help you out of a tricky situation. They can be purchased from the campus for varying amounts of gold and range from quite cheap to a little expensive. But anyway, there’s a lot to get through so let’s jump right into it.

Bottle of Boundless Coffee

The Bottle of Boundless Coffee is something I think we all wish we had. This bottle, unsurprisingly, holds warm coffee that never runs out. No other liquid can be placed inside the bottle, it only accepts coffee. Each time you want to drink from the bottle you’ll need to roll a d20. If you manage to roll a 1, the bottle will refuse to dispense coffee for the next hour. It also comes with the rule that you must drink directly from the bottle. Pouring into another container will just cause the coffee to vanish. Players can purchase the Bottle of Boundless Coffee for 100 gp.

Cuddly Strixhaven Mascot

For anyone who gets lonely on an adventure, this mascot might cheer you up. The Cuddly Strixhaven Mascot is a soft, magic toy that is honestly a little creepy. Pressing it to your arm, shoulder or leg as an action will make the toy cling onto you for an hour. You can remove it at any time, but if left alone it’ll remain there for a full hour. This toy can also be used to help get rid of a frightened condition. If it’s on your person when making a saving throw against the condition, the mascot can give you advantage on the roll. The Cuddly Strixhaven Mascot is available for 100 gp.

Lorehold Primer

The Lorehold Primer is a magic textbook that comes with a pretty powerful ability. Players can use the book to add a 1d4 bonus to an Intelligence (History) or Intelligence (Religion) roll. This bonus applied immediately after the roll of a d20. The primer has 3 charges, which it regains with 1d3 at dawn. The primer can also be used to cast a 1st-level Cleric or Wizard spell without the use of a spell slot. This can also be done at the end of a long rest and only works when holding the primer. So it’s a pretty powerful tool for clever spellcasters. It’s purchasable for 300 gp.

Prismari Primer

The Prismari Primer is another textbook that holds some impressive power. This book provides the user with a chance to add a 1d4 bonus to Intelligence (History) or Intelligence (Religion) rolls. So it’s going to benefit characters that have an interest in finding ancient history or understanding religious groups. It has 3 charges and regains 1d3 of those charges at dawn. Players can also choose a 1st-level spell from the Cleric or Wizard spell list and use the primer to cast them. This doesn’t use a spell slot but does require the book to be held. The Prismari primer is available for 300 gp.

Quandrix Primer

The Quandrix Primer is a textbook that favors those who are in tune with nature and the arcane. This book gives the user a chance to add a 1d4 bonus to Intelligence (Arcana) or Intelligence (Nature) rolls. So it’ll be the most useful to characters that focus on these two skills. It’ll be especially good for classes like Druids that appreciate nature and magic in general. It has 3 charges and can regain 1d3 of them at dawn. It also lets you cast a 1st-level spell from the Druid or Wizard spell list. It doesn’t use up a spell slot this way, but you have to be holding the textbook. It is purchasable for 300 gp.

Silverquill Primer

This next primer is actually a little different from the ones we’ve covered so far. The Silverquill Primer is a textbook that favors those with conversation-based skills. It gives the user a chance to add a 1d4 bonus to Charisma (Intimidation) and Charisma (Persuasion) rolls. So if your character is more socially inclined than others, this book may be the best fit. It has 3 charges and can regain 1d3 of them at dawn. It also lets you cast a 1st-level spell from the Bard or Cleric spell lists. This way, it doesn’t use up a spell slot, but the textbook must be held in your hand. The Silverquill Primer costs 300 gp.

Strixhaven Pennant

The Strixhaven Pennant is a rather simple trinket that could help you out in a dark situation. The pennant bears the symbol of Strixhaven, or it can bear the symbol of one of its colleges. These include: Lorehold, Primari, Quandrix, Silverquill and Witherbloom. It doesn’t really matter what symbol it has though as it has no bearing on its effects. When the pennant is shaken, it begins to glisten and a bright light is cast in a 10-foot radius. With a dim light radiating out to an additional 10 feet. If you find yourself stuck in some random cave, this could prove to be really useful. The Strixhaven Pennant can be purchased for 100 gp.

Witherbloom Primer

The Witherbloom primer is another magical textbook that grants some power to its user. It gives whoever holds it a chance to add a 1d4 bonus to Intelligence (Nature) or Wisdom (Survival) rolls. This is another good option for characters that are in-tune with nature and their surroundings. It has 3 charges which it can regain with 1d3 at dawn.  It also allows you to choose a 1st-level spell from the Druid or Wizard spell list and use that spell without expending a spell slot. Though the book must be in your hands to use the spell. The Witherbloom Primer costs 300 gp.

Weapons and Spell Scrolls

You can also purchase weapons and spell scrolls at Strixhaven. The full list is quite extensive and can be found in the DMG. While most of the weapons aren’t exactly magic items in their own right, they each have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls. You can purchase a weapon for 300 gp. The spell scrolls are all 1st-level spells and cost 50 gp each. The full list of these can also be found in the DMG.

Conclusion

Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos adds in a ton of stuff that can make campaigns even more interesting. The magic items listed here are only scratching the surface of what’s in store in the new expansion. It also includes a number of powerful spells that are worth checking out.
