You can always just pick a name at random or push a button on a name generator. However, if you want a deeper understanding of the background of your character, it is helpful to know the culture and naming conventions of your character’s race. Below, we discuss not only common examples of Tiefling names, but also the conventions that bring these names about.
Do Tieflings Pick Their Own Names?
Many races carry unique naming conventions based on their culture or home region. Tieflings do not have this shared culture, given that they are essentially an offshoot of another race created entirely as a choice. Because of this, there are no cultural norms that go into selecting a name for your Tiefling character.
Some Tiefling lines maintain their human surname from one generation to the other. For example, a Tiefling born into a family in Calimshan might keep the name and traditions common with their ancestors from that country.
More frequently, Tieflings will adopt a name derived from the infernal language that reflects their fiendish heritage. This could include adopting their demon kin’s name as a surname, or making use of a single name that is an adaption from infernal language.
What Are Virtue Tiefling Names?
While many tieflings adopt a name from the culture in which they were raised, some choose so-called “virtue” names. Instead of being reflective of their culture, some tieflings choose a name that embodies a virtue they hold dear. These are typically one-word names that tieflings take in an effort to find their place in a world that feels foreign to them.
